Purpose

The Five Star Council Award was created to recognize the councils around Ohio who support all of the current OASC programs. Without students attending our Workshops, Retreats and Conferences and without advisors actively involved in our programs, we could not survive. As a result the Five Star Council Award recognizes these schools that financially go beyond what is the norm.

Procedure

"Stars" are awarded for attendance and involvement at OASC programs. There are seven opportunities for a school to be awarded a star. In order to qualify, a school must earn five stars. Note well, of the five stars earned, One must be for membership and another must be attendance at the OASC State Conference. Councils that qualify for a Five Star Council Award must submit to the OASC Office in Canton the official application by the yearly due date. It will be verified by the OASC Office, and special certificates will be awarded at the annual State Conference.

7 Ways for Schools to Earn a Star:

  1. A current member of OASC - Required
  2. Four delegates attending the current OASC State Conference - Required
  3. Paid attendance at the previous Summer Workshops by at least two delegates
  4. Four paid delegates attending OASC "Super Saturday" Fall Conference
  5. Four students active in the OASC "Army of Volunteers"\
  6. Four paid delegates attending an OASC Retreat
  7. Two recruited non-member schools into OASC

 

Mission

In striving to "build a new generation" we will aid our community to aid us all.

Purpose

Service to others is one of the most important learning factors for leaders. As one does something for another, with the only reward being the satisfaction that another person's life has been made easier, one discovers the nobility of character. Student leaders not only help themselves by their service to others, but also become examples to others as they serve their schools and communities.

OASC recognizes that many Student Council programs already sponsor and participate in various service projects. Our intention with the "Army of Volunteers" is to make this service work known to others.And in so doing encourage even greater participation plus provide ideas for those groups that have not started service work in their Council to date.

Procedure

Please complete the application form as indicated. Forms will be mailed to schools prior to the State Conference. The form asks for you to submit a detailed explanation of the service work you do. This material is part of the application process. It will be filed and used again as a resource for follow-up requests and information. This is because every project is organized differently - no form could ask all the right questions. In general, the explanation you submit should have a history of how and why you got started into the service project(s). It should detail how you organized it from start to finish.

What does the application need?

  • How many students were involved and the number of hours that were contributed?
  • What were the various jobs and roles?
  • What role did the advisor play in the whole process?
  • How did both the organization and students benefit by your service?
  • Don't forget to include forms you used and sample letters.

Purpose

The purpose of the OASC Honor Council Award is to provide state-wide recognition for student councils that maintain and complete objectives and activities for a strong year-round program. Schools that participate in the Honor Council program will be recognized at the State Conference and will be awarded a certificate for display in their school.

Procedure

Schools must apply using the form included in their annual membership renewal packet. This form must be submitted with the school's Honor Council Book. However, you can get all the information you need to apply and make your Honor Council Book from this webpage.

In order to participate in the Honor Council program, a school must complete and assemble a scrapbook of their student council activities. This webpage and the Honor Council Award Form lists some of the essential elements that successful student councils should have.

Like any scrapbook, it should be a complete record of what your council does. Include pictures, drawings, letters, notes, summaries, examples, etc., to show how you have completed each item, activity or project. It is especially important to include many pictures and to be creative with your Honor Council Book.

Look for the list of requirements for your student council to show in your Honor Council Book to be mailed to your school prior to State Conference. Go through the list and check the items that can be found in your scrapbook. Record the point value listed and indicate the page number where that item can be found in your book. Each item represents a point value. There is no minimum count for any section. The total number of points your school earns will determine your award. The order of the book is not important, only the completion of the items and your marking the page in your scrapbook where it can be found.

The Honor Council Award has two levels:

  • Honor Council with merit: 98 to 70 points
  • Honor Council participant: 69 points or less

Notes:

Honor Council Books will be displayed at the State Conference. They can be picked up at that time. The Honor Council Book will not be mailed back to any school unless the postage and handling fee is enclosed with your book.

Purpose

Consecutive membership awards, presented at the annual State Conference, recognize members who maintain long-standing membership in the organization. Awards are automatically given at five-year intervals.
